What does home insurance cover?

Home insurance provides financial cover for the contents of your home if something were to go wrong.

From furniture to clothing, financially protecting your belongings can give you peace of mind.

Home insurance isn’t mandatory, but it’s highly recommended. If you rent, your landlord may already have insurance that covers the property. However, you may want to get cover for the contents and your personal belongings.

How does home insurance work?

Home insurance works in the same way as other insurance types. Think about the level of cover you need, find a supplier, and then take out an insurance policy.

It can help to go round each room in your home and list things you want to cover. Estimate how much it would be to replace each item with a new one. Add everything together to calculate how much cover you need in total.

You can typically get a quote online or over the phone (depending on the provider). Ideally, you should compare a few quotes to find the one most suited to your needs.

What home insurance covers

There are different types of home insurance you can get. Your home insurance can cover things such as:

  • Furniture
  • Art
  • Jewellery or watches
  • Electronics

Depending on the policy, it can also cover your home against things like accidental damage.

Some home insurance policies will cover your belongings if you’re moving. For example, GIG home insurance provides cover for your contents when moving houses within the UAE with a moving company. You can also get cover for things like luxury watches and precious artefacts.

To be eligible for GIG home insurance, you need:

  • To be a UAE resident
  • To be an existing HSBC Bank Middle East Limited customer
  • Your property to be in UAE
  • Your rental contract to be in your name

Looking for home insurance?

When comparing home insurance policies, think about what you need cover for. Asking yourself questions can help narrow down what you need, for example:

  1. Does this home insurance cover lost jewellery?
  2. Does this home insurance cover termite damage?
  3. Does this home insurance cover accidental damage?

You can make the questions as specific or general as you want.

Before buying any insurance, read the policy and the terms and conditions to make sure you fully understand the details, including any costs.
